Intelligence authorities in Shendi in River Nile State in Sudan, detain 16 people in their prisons for six days

The military intelligence authorities in the city of Shendi in the River Nile state, arrested (16) people from the Nuba Mountains and are interrogating them, and concerns among the families of the detainees that they will be subjected to torture, and appeals from human rights organizations to release them immediately.

A source, who preferred not to be named for security reasons, told Radio Dabanga on Friday that intelligence authorities in the city of Shendi had arrested 16 people, all from the Nuba Mountains and members of the Sudanese Christian Church in the Ezba area of the city of Bahri. He explained that the arrests took place in batches and at different times since last Sunday, the sixth of October.

He explained that all the arrests were made from the position of Shendi the moment they arrived in the city accompanied by their families coming from Khartoum North, where he pointed to the arrest of young people and the release of families, who numbered (57) people, including women and children.

He warned that the detainees were taken to intelligence detention centers in Shendi amid the secrecy of information about what is happening to them inside the prisons, pointing to the refusal of the authorities in the military command in the city to allow visits to the families of detainees and not to disclose the reasons for the arrest.

The Nuba Mountains Lawyers Union  condemned in the strongest terms this arrest and described it as a racist approach and behavior against the people of the Nuba Mountains.

A statement issued by the union on Friday said freedom of movement or movement was a human right respected by the constitution, international law and Sudanese law  , which stipulates the illegality of extrajudicial detention.

The statement held the governor of River Nile state, the state security committee and military intelligence responsible for what happened and what will happen to the detainees and their families.

The statement called on the authorities to release all detainees immediately and unconditionally within  a maximum period of 24 hours and to allow them to go to any safe place in Sudan they want to go.
